Gizmodo is reporting that Brian Michael Bendis, long time writer for Marvel and creator of such characters as Jessica Jones, Riri Williams, and Miles Morales, has signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics. Described as a multi-year exclusive deal, it appears this move ends Mr. Bendis’s time at Marvel Comics.
This move comes at a time where Marvel’s sales are currently slumping. While some contribute the tanking Marvel sales to the diversity push Marvel has been on for the past few years, they’re not taking into account some of the stupid marketing decisions Marvel has made lately such as forcing comic book stores to order more copies of certain comics in order to sell exclusive lenticular covers of the Marvel Legacy series.
This is a huge loss for Marvel, make no mistake. Marvel will move on of course. They have a wonderful team of writers, artists, and letterers that will continue to bring our favorite characters to life. DC gains one of the best writers of the past twenty five years to tell stories of some of our favorite characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and others. Yet with this news, I can’t help but feel a little sad. The creator of Jessica Jones and Miles Morales will no longer have a hand in the future of those characters, at least for the foreseeable future.
One other aspect to consider is this. For the longest time, Brian Bendis was apart of an advisory team for Marvel Studios, offering his two cents on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Geoff Johns heading up the DCEU, will he utilize Brian Bendis in a similar fashion to make the DC movies better? Time will tell.
